My Disney Journey Comes Full Circle

My Disney Journey Comes Full Circle

There's something about Disney that gets into your soul. For me, it wasn't an obsession I chose—it was passed down like a treasured heirloom from my dad, who has made visiting the parks a cornerstone of his life. My parents religiously return to Walt Disney World every couple of years, and they've been chasing that magic since the early days of their marriage at Disneyland. Little did I know that their love of the parks would spark a passion in me that would shape decades of memories.

The Beginning: A Five-Year-Old's First Magic

I was only five years old when I first stepped into Magic Kingdom. The details are fuzzy now—aren't they always with childhood memories?—but the feeling stuck with me. That electric sense of wonder, the way the castle seemed to touch the sky, the pure joy radiating from everyone around me. Even though I can barely piece together specific moments from that trip, it planted a seed that would grow into a lifelong love affair with Disney parks.

Since that first visit, I've returned to Walt Disney World twice more and made it to Disneyland once. Each trip has felt like coming home to a place that exists outside of normal reality—a sanctuary where you can step away from the noise and stress of everyday life and just be in the moment.

Why Disney Is My Escape

There's a unique magic about Disney parks that goes beyond the attractions and the food (though, let's be honest, those definitely help). It's the escape from reality. For a few days, you're not worried about deadlines, bills, or the endless scroll of bad news. You're surrounded by people who are there to celebrate joy, wonder, and imagination. You feel it in the air—literally everyone around you is invested in having a great time.

What I love most, though, is witnessing other people's joy. Seeing a kid's face light up when they see a character they love, watching couples relive their own magical moments, observing families bond over shared experiences—that's what keeps me coming back. Disney parks are one of the few places left where collective happiness feels genuine and contagious.

The Marching Band Memory That Changed Everything

When I was in high school, my marching band got the opportunity to march in a parade at Magic Kingdom. I still remember the electric buzz of that moment—putting on the uniform, lining up, and then actually walking down Main Street USA as part of the show. But here's where the story gets better: my now-wife was also part of that band trip. That magical day in the parks was a piece of the puzzle that eventually led to us getting together.

Life has a beautiful way of coming full circle.

Full Circle: May 2026

Fast forward to today, and I'm about to experience that same magic all over again—but with a completely different perspective. In May 2026, my wife (now the high school band director) and our oldest son will be returning to Magic Kingdom to march in the same parade where we met.

I still get chills thinking about it.

This time, I won't just be marching alongside them—I'll be watching from the crowd, experiencing the parks as a parent. I'll relive those moments of wonder that first captured my heart thirty years ago. My wife will be leading the next generation of musicians through the same Main Street USA where she was a student. It's the kind of Disney magic that even the Imagineers couldn't script better.

Beyond the Parks: My Disney Obsession

I'll be honest—I'm not just a Disney parks person. My passion extends far beyond the turnstiles and into everything Disney: the movies, the shows, the history, the story of it all. I'm particularly fascinated by the history of Imagineering and Walt Disney himself. His relentless drive, his refusal to accept "that's impossible," his ability to see potential where others saw obstacles—it's genuinely inspiring.

In fact, I try to apply Walt's philosophy to my day job as a software developer. The same mindset that created Cinderella Castle from imagination and innovation can revolutionize the way we build software. It doesn't matter if something has been done before. The goal is always to find new and better ways to solve problems, to create experiences that delight our customers, and to push past the boundaries of "good enough."

Walt once said, "If you dream it, you can do it." That applies to so much more than theme parks.

My Disney Media Diet

Yes, I watch Disney+ more than any other streaming service (okay, probably a lot more). Yes, I keep tabs on park news and updates even when I'm not actively planning a trip. Yes, I lose hours down the rabbit hole of Imagineering documentaries and behind-the-scenes videos.

But I try not to let it take over my life completely. Balance is key, right?

Disneyland vs. Walt Disney World: Why I Love Both

If you've ever been to both parks, you know they're completely different experiences.

Disneyland is pure magic in its original, organic form. Walking down Main Street and feeling the park's history beneath your feet, experiencing attractions that Walt himself might have watched guests enjoy—there's something irreplaceable about that. It's also more manageable for a quick trip or when you're traveling with little ones. You can actually see most of what you want to see without feeling like you need a week to cover it all.

Walt Disney World, on the other hand, is vast. Four theme parks, sprawling resorts, entertainment districts, and experiences around every corner. You could visit a dozen times and still feel like you haven't experienced everything. There's something incredible about that sense of endless discovery.

Both have earned permanent spots in my heart for different reasons.

Dreams for the Future

Right now, my focus is on May 2026 and that full-circle moment at Magic Kingdom. But my bucket list doesn't stop there. Eventually, I want to experience Disneyland Paris and Shanghai Disney Resort. Each park has its own unique flavor of magic, and I'm determined to experience them all.

But one adventure at a time. For now, I'm just counting down the days until I can watch my son follow in his parents' footsteps in the most magical place on Earth.

What's Next

This is just the beginning of documenting my Disney journey. I'm planning to share detailed trip reports from our May 2026 adventure, my thoughts on everything from new attractions to Imagineering inspiration, and the random musings of someone who's maybe a little too invested in the magic.

If you love Disney—whether you're a casual visitor, a hardcore fan, or someone who just appreciates the artistry and innovation behind it all—I hope you'll stick around for the ride.

Because at the end of the day, that's what Disney is: an invitation to believe in magic, to embrace wonder, and to experience joy in its purest form. And honestly? I'm never going to stop chasing that feeling.

Here's to the magic, to family, to full-circle moments, and to whatever adventures lie ahead. 🏰✨
